Gene Tierney is the notorious female outlaw Belle Starr in this 20th Century Fox version of the life of the Bandit Queen. To put it mildly, it's a big bust for western bad girl enthusiast. Belle is portrayed as a spoiled southern belle who leads a revolt against those nasty Yankee carpetbaggers. This movie kills Belle off about 20 years before she was actually shot off her horse by an unknown assassin. The worst part is that she's not much of a cowgirl here. All she does in that direction is strap on a gun belt over dress, and there's not much of that. It is one huge disappointment. Our favorite biography of this icon of the old west is The Belle Starr Story from 1968. KJW
